I think it’s impossible to say that not being able to afford a gym membership is the reason you don’t work out anymore. Aside from bodyweight workouts, online programs, at home equipment, and corporate options if you are lucky enough to work for a company that offers fitness at work, many cities and local studios are jumping on the bandwagon to offer various free fitness classes and series throughout the year. It’s pretty freaking awesome.

Street Sweat

For my local readers, there’s November Project, New Balance Girls Night Outs (my favorite), P.O. Fitness in the Square, the Tabata classes in Faneuil I mentioned in a recent Friday Favorites, running clubs through stores like Marathon Sports or groups like Charles River Running… the list goes on and on.

If you are looking for something new to check out in July and August, I encourage you to take a peek at the Street Sweat calendar. Street Sweat is a free fitness series held all summer long at The Street in Chestnut Hill in Newton, and it’s a great choice for those who can’t necessarily make it downtown for a lot of other freebie options. It’s also a nice way to take your workout outside while the weather is nice! After being cooped up all winter in Boston, it’s really not so fun to spend hours inside at the gym.

As you can see, the Street Sweat classes will feature a variety of fitness styles like bootcamp, cardio resistance, and yoga, and they are offered throughout the week in both the mornings and evenings to accommodate various schedules. The classes also cater to all fitness levels.

Yoga Street Sweat

For anyone interested in a fitness date next week, I will be checking out the 6pm cardio resistance training (CRT) class on Tuesday, July 14th. It’s called Fit Camp, it’s taught by Jake Maulin of  TriJake Fitness, and the class will combine stabilizing core exercises, cardio endurance drills, and power performance training.

Tuesday’s event is a little different from the other free classes during the summer though! After the bootcamp class is done, there will be an after party at City Sports with a live DJ, 20% off discounts, and some refreshments. I will also be kicking off the after party by saying a few words. I would love to meet you guys or see some familiar faces there, so I hope you’ll join me. 🙂
